Death in World of Warcraft Classic is about to become a somewhat more harrowing experience, Blizzard having just revealed plans to introduce official "hardcore" servers at some point later this summer. Inspired by the popular fan made game mode, the feature aims to inject new life into World of Warcraft Classic, something which has recently been dwindling in popularity.
The fan made version of the mode, Hardcore, utilizes an eponymous add-on to monitor player progress. This implements various rules and restrictions like allowing players to complete dungeons only once before reaching Level 60, prohibiting the use of the Auction House, and banning player-to-player trading unless both parties are leveling partners. Hardcore can only be experienced on a couple of existing servers, at least for the moment.

Developer Josh Greenfield made the announcement during a livestream for the recently held speedrunning tournament Hardcore All-Stars, organized and sponsored by the community in partnership with Blizzard. Although specific details remain scarce, Greenfield confirmed some of the features that players can expect to see in the official version of the game mode. In addition to permadeath, Blizzard’s version of Hardcore is going to introduce a "mak'gora" dueling system in which players will be able to challenge each other to the death. Greenfield went on to explain how the upcoming Hardcore servers will be separate from the seasonal servers which are currently being set aside for World of Warcraft Classic.
