Actor Samuel L. Jackson reveals why he doesn’t like method acting and has avoided using the technique throughout his lengthy career. Jackson made a name for himself in the 90s with movies like Pulp Fiction and Jungle Fever. Nowadays, audiences will be most familiar with his work as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Many acting practitioners suggest using method acting to approach performance. The technique has actors stay in character for the duration of a project to get a better emotional understanding of their character and, hopefully, give a better overall performance. This approach can be used to varying degrees so while some actors might only utilize this on set, others will spend long periods of time living solely as their character. During an interview with Collider, Jackson touched on his dislike for method acting. While filming his most recent project The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey where he plays someone who is suffering from dementia, the actors were inevitably going to get into some heavy emotional scenes, but Jackson managed to reach those emotional points without attempting to method act. Jackson believes that, even when filming difficult scenes, the process should be fun but finds that method actors don’t often enjoy the process.
