Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi shares his praise for the first Avengers movie and depicting the characters. The 2012 movie served as a culmination of Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by bringing together the superheroes Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Thor to protect the world from the latter's evil adopted brother Loki from attempting to conquer the Earth. The group are brought together by S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury under the Avengers Initiative.
The ensemble cast for The Avengers included Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson. Written and directed by Joss Whedon on a previous draft from Zak Penn, the film was a mammoth success upon its release, grossing over $1.5 billion, becoming the third-highest-grossing film at the time and receiving rave reviews for Whedon's direction, its grandiose action sequences, the performances of its cast and musical score. The Avengers helped direct the future of the MCU in a number of major directions as well as inspired one filmmaker to be interested in returning to the genre.

In anticipation of his return to the world of Marvel, Sam Raimi caught up with AMC Theaters to discuss Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
