Sam Raimi Spent 9 Years Growing Avocados Before Doctor Strange 2, Apparently
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness marks the triumphant return of Sam Raimi, director of the Evil Dead and Toby McGuire Spider-Man films, and the first new movie he’s directed since 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful. It makes you wonder just what Raimi has filled his days with over the past nine years, and the answer is apparently gardening.
In an interview with Collider, Raimi was asked if he ever came close to accepting a directing role after Oz the Great and Powerful. "I didn't come close to direct anything after that," he replied. "I needed time away after that to get a hungry again, learned about filmmaking, taking some lessons, do some gardening."

Raimi then confirmed that his gardening hobby included avocados “among other things.”
"I did take some time to recalibrate my sense as a director," Raimi told the Associated Press after being asked a very similar question. "Yes, I was kind of hiding out, producing young filmmakers' work, trying to relearn new ways how to do my job so I didn’t become stale. I spent a lot of time my garden thinking about it. So when the call came in for this picture, I was really ready to jump back in. I was hungry to make another movie."
In the same interview, the AP also asked if there was any truth to Raimi’s recent statement that he’d “show the kids how to make a superhero movie” in The Multiverse of Madness. "That’s the insecure me making a joke like 'I’ll show you!' when in fact it’s like, 'I’m terrified. I wonder if I can still pull this off.'"
