Sam Raimi recalls filming the original Evil Dead movie, citing its incredibly low budget as brutal and extremely difficult to work with. Written and directed by Raimi, the 1981 horror film served as an expansion of his, producing partner Robert Tapert and star Bruce Campbell's proof of concept short film Within the Woods. The Evil Dead centers on Ash Williams and his college friends, sister and girlfriend heading up to a cabin in the woods for a remote vacation, only to accidentally unleash a demonic force possessing and killing them off.
Campbell starred in The Evil Dead as now-iconic genre hero Ash Williams alongside Ellen Sandweiss as Cheryl, Richard DeManincor as Scott, Betsy Baker as Linda and Theresa Tilly as Shelly. Initially only getting a limited theatrical release, the horror film became a sleeper hit as it grossed an estimated $2.4 million domestically and received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike for visceral effects and Raimi's stylish direction. The Evil Dead's popularity would continue in the 40 years after its release, in which it received two sequels, the TV sequel series Ash vs. Evil Dead, a 2013 rebootquel from Fede Álvarez and expansions into other mediums.
