Mobile carriers make a lot of money from accessories. Often, that's why they really want to get you into a store to buy your phone—not for the phone, but for the cases and batteries and PopSockets and whatever.
But ... how about a personal massager? What is this, Hammacher Schlemmer? Verizon pointed out to us today—very weirdly, I must add—that it is now selling a line of Therabody massagers(Opens in a new window) ranging from $99 to $599. These are mostly intense, percussive massagers, not "massagers," although I guess any massager can be a "massager" if you put your mind to it.
Verizon had no coherent comment on why it's selling these things. Looking through the depths of Verizon's online store, though, I kind of got a clue. Verizon has categories marked "home" and "health." It wants to be your smart-home store and your connected-health store; it sells robovacs and gaming mice, neither of which, like a Theragun, I would be likely to buy from Verizon.
Still, though, it's super weird for Verizon to be selling health-care products that are neither an accessory for a mobile device nor connect to a mobile network. AT&T and T-Mobile do not appear to sell personal massagers.
If Amazon ever has some sort of supply-chain-driven shortage of Theraguns, though, or you get a Verizon gift card and have sore muscles from carrying your oversized Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, you know where to turn.
