DC's Green Lantern has fought plenty of otherworldly creatures and supervillains, but his most recent foe is a version of Marvel's Venom — albeit far stronger and more devastating. The DC Universe is in dire straits after a shocking battle ended in an equally shocking defeat for the Justice League, ending in the death of the entire team. The Earth is beset by threats in their absence, and inJustice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1, a particular threat nearly destroys Earth's oceans.
In Justice League #75, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and the rest of the Justice League (with the exception of the Flash) are transported to the remains of a dead universe. There they meet the villain Pariah, who has since been taken over by the Great Darkness: a mysterious and primordial force that seeks to destroy the DC Universe. The Justice League battles the Dark Army, a group of villains enthralled by the Great Darkness (which even includes Darkseid), and Pariah kills the members of the League one by one. Only Black Adam manages to escape, exclaiming «The Justice League...are dead.» upon his return.

With the League gone, the remaining superheroes of Earth are outnumbered by extraterrestrial threats. Case in point: Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1, written by Joshua Williamson with art by Dan Jurgens, depicts the famous Green Lantern Hal Jordan (John Stewart was killed) chasing a purple alien on its way to Earth.
