Star Wars as a franchise is (almost) universally loved, but even the biggest fans—those who know can read Aurebesh(Opens in a new window) and know the name of Chewbacca's dad(Opens in a new window)—will readily admit that the movies and shows have not all delivered the same quality. Some the critics hate more than the fans—and sometimes, vice versa. But how do you determine which shows and films are tops in quality?
The internet has IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes scores to do that for us, and FinanceBuzz(Opens in a new window) quantified the available data infographic-style. That includes a look at how Disney+ streaming shows such as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett stack up against non-Disney-made shows (say, The Clone Wars) and even the films from which this franchise sprung back in 1977.
First, the movies. The original trilogy (Episodes IV through VI—the ones with Luke Skywalker making goo-goo eyes at the Princess who we'd later find out was his sister) are the most beloved by audiences and critics alike. Standing tall as the best film of the entire canon is The Empire Strikes Back.
Things get weird with the latest trilogy (Episodes VII through IX), which feature the characters Finn, Rey, Kylo Ren, BB-8, and a few old pals from the previous films. For example, critics loved Episode VIII (The Last Jedi) almost as much as the originals, but audiences on Rotten Tomatoes pan it. But the opposite happened with the final film, Rise of Skywalker, though it still scores ahead of the prequels with audiences.
Of course, all those films, even the standalones such as Solo and the exquisite Rogue One, are now available on Disney+. And with Disney+ has come new content, the likes of which fans have never seen before—live-action
