The Warner Bros. crossover brawler will be getting a new PvE Rifts mode when it relaunches later this month. The solo and co-op mode moves away from the PvP modes found in the early access version of the game and is meant to teach new players the mechanics of the game, as well as letting veteran players hone their skills.
The PvE Rifts mode is split into chapters, each of which is called a Rift. Each Rift has a particular theme, such as new character The Joker infiltrating the Batcave or Batman and Velma teaming up to decide who’s the best detective. They’re then split into various nodes that represent different battles and challenges, such as boss fights and more than a dozen mini-games.
Each node has unique mutators, be it skill-driven, story-driven, or “eccentric,” which allow for “a variety of unexpected twists.” Some mutators will match the theme of the Rift, while others are just meant to cause maximum chaos. For example, Infinite Jumps means players have to complete the node without touching the ground. Meanwhile, the Chicken Gauntlets Mutator turns opponents into a rotisserie chicken.
Completed optional mission objectives give rewards like gems, which come in attack, defense, and utility forms. These are then used to raise stats and trigger special effects like damage buffs and higher mobility. Up to three gems can be equipped at any time and they can also be upgraded to increase their effects. Gems can also be earned by completing the season’s battle pass
Warner Bros. Games has said the mode will get post-launch content updates to “keep things fresh.” These will include new rift variants and seasonal “attunements”. As well as teaching the basics and sharpening skills, the mode is meant for players to test out new characters, so any post-launch characters will almost certainly be part of the mode’s content updates too.
