An unofficial The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker Unreal Engine 5 remake is currently in the works, providing a glimpse of what an official remake would look like using modern gaming engines and technology.
The remake is currently being developed by Etan Solrac, who recently shared a video showcasing the differences between Lumen and Screen Space Global Illumination using sequences set in a recreation of the Forsaken Fortress, highlighting how SSGI can get really close to Lumen.
In another video shared a few weeks back, the developer showed more footage from their Zelda: Wind Waker Unreal Engine 5 remake, focusing on the implementation of auto-leap mechanics, sound, and the remaking of Link's facial animations, which looks as impressive as the character model does.
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker was originally released on Nintendo Gamecube before getting ported to the Wii U console with enhanced visuals and more. The game was long rumored to be coming to Nintendo Switch as well, but it has yet to materialize, years after these rumors started circulating online. With the second half of 2024 looking barren for the console, however, it wouldn't be surprising for Nintendo to finally release this port to beef up its release schedule as the company gears up for the launch of the yet-to-be-revealed Nintendo Switch 2.
