During their annual Worldwide Developers Conference today, Apple announced improved support for a variety of modern games, including World of Warcraft! While official support is still up to the game developers themselves, and Blizzard's support for MacOS is somewhat limited, but these improvements could signal future possibilities for Mac gamers.
That said, Apples common framework also makes it easier to port software between personal computers, iPhones, and iPads, since they all use the same architecture. So while this technically means that Mac support for WoW could be expanded to iPhone or iPad (and in fact has already has been done by third parties), official support is still limited by the developer — don't expect to see World of Warcraft in the iOS store anytime soon.
It's unclear how much impact this has on The War Within, as there was no specific mention of World of Warcraft or Blizzard during the presentation.
While the expansion runs well on newer Apple silicon series chips, support for older generation AMD and Intel graphics drivers has been all but abandoned. Still, the fact that The War Within is highlighted in the slides gives us hope that there will be a more concerted effort to support playing World of Warcraft on MacOS.
We're so excited to see more and more game developers embracing the Mac with great games like these, including the most recent game of the year, «Baldur's Gate 3,» all leveraging Metal 3 to deliver smooth frame rates, provide high-quality visuals, and take full advantage of Apple silicon.
Every Mac in the lineup can play today's most cutting-edge games, like «Death Stranding: Director's Cut.» And so can iPhone 15 Pro and any iPad with an M-series chip. And for developers, this creates a unified gaming platform across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, spanning well over a hundred million devices and growing rapidly.
These devices are capable of playing an entirely new class of games! And.
