You'd be forgiven for forgetting a PS5, PC remake of PS4 horror classic Until Dawn is in the works — there has been very little chatter or promotion up until now — but a new age rating listed by the ESRB confirms the remake is still on the way.
Since this is expected to be a one-to-one remake of the original game, the description provided by the firm contains very little in the way of new information; for fans it simply acts as a reminder Until Dawn will still be out this year. «This is a survival-horror adventure game in which players help eight friends survive a serial killer at a mountain retreat,» the age rating description states. «As players progress through the game, they explore environments while choosing action/decision paths via on-screen prompts.» Yeah, that sounds like Until Dawn alright.
While original studio Supermassive Games has its focus set on The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Casting of Frank Stone, the remake is in the hands of Ballistic Moon, a new team working with PlayStation. So far, all we've been treated to is a gameplay trailer and the promise of a new third-person camera and a visual and audio overhaul.
«Until Dawn has been rebuilt with the latest tools and techniques. New and improved animations build on the success of the original character performances. Characters, environments and VFX have been upgraded – all for a truly enhanced cinematic horror experience,» creative director Neil McEwan said upon the remake's unveiling. «We use a broader cinematic tonal colour palette and new perspectives to make the story more nuanced and emotional. We’ve been brave enough to shine a light into the dark, unseen corners of Blackwood Mountain and added a third-person camera, which means you can now look behind the curtain of the original game, exploring enhanced and new locations with new interactions and collectables.»
