Rob Reiner has offered up a, revealing how far along the sequel to the hit mockumentary is.
Speaking to Deadline, Reiner opened up a bit about the upcoming film, which has been filming since the beginning of the year. According to Reiner, the project is almost done filming and will actually be ready to show off to distributors sometime later this year.
“It’s going good. Our first screening for our family and friends will be probably in August,” Reiner said. “And then sometime in September, we’ll start showing it to distributors, and we’re hoping to have it out sometime late spring or early summer of next year.”
A sequel to This Is Spinal Tap was announced in May 2022 and was initially eying a March 19, 2024, release; however, it was delayed because of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Writers Guild of America (WGA) strikes.
According to Variety, the plot of the movie “sees Spinal Tap, England’s loudest and most punctual band, reunite following a 15-year hiatus for one final concert.” Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Matthew George are producing This Is Spinal Tap 2, while Christopher H. Warner and Derrick Rossi serve as executive producers.
This Is Spinal Tap launched to nearly universal acclaim but didn’t make too much money at the box office. However, its home video release saw an even larger audience flock to it, and it quickly gained a large cult following and would eventually be selected for preservation by the National Film Registry in 2002 after being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress.
