The Witcher star Freya Allan has finally broken her silence on the backlash over Liam Hemsworth’s casting as Geralt in the upcoming season of the Netflix series.
Henry Cavill played the role of Geralt in the series and became one of the primary reasons for the show’s success. However, right before the premiere of Season 3, Cavill announced that he would not be reprising the role of the iconic character in Season 4. As a result, Netflix revealed that Liam Hemsworth will play the aforementioned character in Season 4 of The Witcher. However, the news of recasting Cavill angered fans, and they started bashing Hemsworth on social media. Now, months after the backlash, Allan has come forward defending her co-star by saying how bad she feels for him.
Speaking in an interview with Collider, Allan opened up about the backlash received by Hemsworth and said how bad she feels for the actor making his debut in Season 4. The actor also noted how Hemsworth is going through rigorous training to truly embody the character before the world gets to see him as Geralt. Allan said, “I don’t want to speak for him, but from what I’ve understood, I feel like he’s really wanting to try and bring the heart. He’s been training. I feel sorry for him, honestly.” Additionally, she didn’t shy away from noticing how fandoms can be really toxic and “attack-y”. She added, “Number one, that fan base can be very attack-y, and it’s not an ideal situation to be in taking up someone else’s role. But I’m really excited to see what he does. And he’s such a lovely guy. I just hope that people give him the time of day, you know?”
It's reasonable for some disappointment to arise from The Witcher's casting changes. Cavill played the role of Geralt with utter precision and delivered some of the show’s finest moments.
