The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination, Nintendo and Universal continues to rack up sales. As Variety reports, it earned $92 million this past weekend, earning $353 million at the domestic box office. Internationally, it earned $102 million for $339 million overall.
Within 13 days, it’s already earned over $700 million worldwide. The feat is especially noteworthy because post-pandemic, only 12 Hollywood films have managed to cross that figure. It’s also the highest-grossing film this year, both domestically and globally, and far surpassed the likes ofWarcraft and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu as the biggest video game adaption yet.
It remains to be seen if the film, starring Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Jack Black as Bowser, can become the first film this year to cross $1 billion in revenue. Given its success, a sequel could also likely be on the cards. Stay tuned for further updates in the coming months.
