The Jedi of Star Wars fame are well-known for using their lightsabers in lieu of more conventional weapons — but this perceived oversight is actually intentional. The Jedi readily admit their weapons are outclassed in every way in Star Wars #25, and would instantly fail their mission should they find themselves outnumbered. But wise warriors like Obi-Wan Kenobi are able to outline exactly why the Jedi use inferior weapons.
According to Obi-Wan in A New Hope, the lightsaber is«Not as clumsy or as random as a blaster. An elegant weapon from a more civilized age.» He could be referring to the Clone Wars, even though that era had plenty of blasters on both sides. No two lightsabers are alike; each Jedi creates their own saber in a ritual process that involves the collection of their own Kyber crystal. This construction process is foregone by the Imperial Inquisitors, who are all issued the same double-bladed lightsaber with the ability to rotate on a circular frame.

In a story printed in the anthology series Star Wars #25 written by Charles Soule with art by Ramon Rosanas, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi engage in a practice duel during the Clone Wars. Anakin wonders why the Jedi Knights use lightsabers and no other weapons; he reasons that Kyber crystals can produce energy necessary to create blasters as well. Obi-Wan responds that the purpose of a lightsaber isn't simply to be used as a deadly weapon:«It is about how we wish to be seen, Anakin, and how that ties into the central mission of the Jedi Order.»
