Obi-Wan Kenobi and Owen Lars nearly shared an unexpected connection in Return of the Jedi, whose early story drafts revealed that the two are brothers. This connection, which would have recontextualized Obi-Wan Kenobi’s relation to Luke Skywalker by essentially making him Luke’s uncle, made its way into one Legends-era book before being reconned twice. Had the connection been canonical, Obi-Wan and Owen’s dishonesty to Luke throughout his upbringing would become even more complex.
Luke and his twin sister Leia were raised separately and didn’t receive Jedi training early in their lives. As part of a long-term plan by Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Bail Organa to eventually bring the Jedi Order back and defeat the Sith, the two would be kept hidden from the Empire and begin their Jedi training when the time was right. While Organa opted to raise Leia, Luke was raised by the Lars family since they were the closest thing he had to relatives, while Obi-Wan watched over him since Tatooine is a harsh and hazardous world.

As revealed in 1997’s Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays, Return of the Jedi was initially going to reveal that Obi-Wan and Owen were brothers, a detail omitted from the final film but included in its novelization. This created some continuity issues, as Obi-Wan and Owen had different surnames, and there wasn’t any indication that one of them was using an alias outside of Obi-Wan’s given name of Ben. Legends-era material corrected this mistake, but having Luke be raised by his "Uncle Owen” would make Kenobi his uncle as well from a certain point of view, and it’d further explain Obi-Wan’s choice to entrust Luke with Owen, as he’d have faith
