The starship of choice for Luke Skywalker has always been the iconic mascot of the Star Wars franchise: the unmistakable X-Wing. Surprisingly, the hero's famous ship is given a different name across the history of the saga's lore, with each encapsulating one of the biggest differences between the canon and Legends versions of Luke Skywalker himself.
In the current Star Wars canon Luke’s ship is officially dubbed Red Five, referencing his famous victory at the Battle of Yavin. But in the original (now bygone) Star Wars Legends continuity, however, Luke’s X-Wing has a far more mundane designation, as revealed in the Thrawn Trilogy.

The name of Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing in Legends is revealed in issue 3 of Heir to the Empire, by Mike Baron, Olivier Vatine, and Fred Blanchard, and it’s simply the ship’s serial number: AA-589. Although Luke’s X-Wing is an iconic craft seen throughout the Star Wars original trilogy and material set afterward, this is a fitting name. When all is said and done, Luke’s X-Wing is a simply starfighter whose only unusual characteristic is the fact that the New Republic allowed Luke to keep it as his personal craft when he resigned from military service following the Battle of Mindor. While the current Star Wars canon treats Luke as a figurehead of the franchise, naming his X-Wing after his most iconic victory accordingly, Legends always reminds its readers that Luke is a person, not a living myth, so his X-Wing’s name simply being its serial number is fitting.
