The Finals Player Count Has Dropped Dramatically
Despite reaching massive numbers during its debut, The Finals player count has dropped dramatically since peaking in December. Days after the free-to-play first-person shooter was shadow dropped at The Game Awards 2023, The Finals was outdoing Call of Duty on Steam. However, it appears as though The Finals has lost some of its allure, as players on Steam have either flocked to other titles in recent weeks or simply walked away.
It's not just on PC where the class-based shooterhas seen success either; The Finals quickly became a big hit on Xbox as well. Set in a sort of gladiatorial game show, The Finals made a name for itself back in the beta phase thanks to its highly destructible environments along with unique ideas for the genre like crowds and commentators. Upon release, The Finals got out to a hot start as one of the most downloaded free-to-play games out there, but a lot has changed since it was released.
After peaking at 242,619 Steam players on December 10, 2023, The Finals plummeted to just 51,314 players yesterday, according to SteamDB. This represents a nearly 80% drop in roughly a month and a half. That said, these numbers only reflect Steam players and don't account for console gamers, as The Finals is also available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
What this dip means for the future of The Finals remains to be seen. The developers have continued to support the game with updates and look to add even more content in the future. On top of that, player dips are to be expected after release. That being said, whether Embark Studios anticipated an almost 80% drop in its Steam player base in less than two months is another question entirely. What is concerning for fans of The Finals, however, is that the year ahead looks loaded with new games that might continue to steal the spotlight.
