Veteran movie director Quentin Tarantino is coming back to direct one more movie, and the Oscar-winner has now shared some additional information about it.
The film is called The Movie Critic, and it takes place in California in 1977. The story is about a man who «really lived, but was never really famous,» Tarantino told Deadline. This person wrote movie reviews for a pornographic magazine. Tarantino was apparently inspired by his own personal experiences of loading porn magazines into a vending machine when he was a teenager.
In the movie, the magazine is called The Popstar Pages, but Tarantino did not disclose the name of the actual magazine from his youth. The reviewer, whom Tarantino also did not name, was a «very funny» and «very rude» writer, Tarantino said. «He cursed. He used racial slurs. But his sh** was really funny. He was as rude as hell,» Tarantino said.
This person was in their mid-30s and died in their late 30s, Tarantino said.
Tarantino has not cast the role yet, but he remarked that Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, who starred in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, are too old for the part.
«I haven't decided yet but it's going to be somebody in the 35 year-old ball park. It'll definitely be a new leading man for me,» Tarantino said.
Tarantino plans to cast an American for the role, in part because he is no fan of the trend of British and Australian actors doing American voices. «I'm not being xenophobic. The Brits would have a hell of a lot more problems if a bunch of American actors came over there with their Dick Van Dyke [Mary Poppins] accents playing famous Brits. They don't want to see that sh**,» he said.
Pre-production on The Movie Critic is expected to enter pre-production in June.
