Sometimes things get weird, although not normally in a murdery way. One day a random person sitting on a train found a helmet and felt an uncontrollable urge to put it on, which was obviously a bad idea from the start but compulsions gonna compulse. Waking up on a beach with no memories isn’t great but a handful of friendly faces provide the details- There’s a mansion filled with nameless, faceless people trying to kill you, and the only way through is to kill them first using whatever weapons and other tricks you can pick up along the way in Hotline Miami-inspired shootouts. It’s a symphony of guns in black, white, and red, punctuated by the bullet-time of Focus, but even with a generous health bar and the ability to slow down time the enemies respond more than quickly enough to stop a run in its tracks at a moment’s notice.
Otxo is a stylishly violent 2D top-down shooter with more than a little roguelike in its makeup. Each floor of the mansion is randomized, but the top-down view gives you more than enough information to come up with a plan before busting in. Ammo is meant to be wasted seeing as each enemy drops their weapon on death, but more stylish kills like kicking award a better boost to the multiplier, giving more cash per kill to buy better powerups at the bar. Some powerups are designed to enhance regular abilities, like refilling the Focus gauge faster, while others completely change the approach to combat such as guns turning into turrets when thrown. It becomes very clear very quickly that, while the basic gameplay looks like Hotline Miami, Otxo is very much its own thing in how the encounters play out, like Raiden vs Radiant Silvergun.
