For the most part swords are just really big knives, but sometimes a special one comes along that has a bit more personality. In the case of Doomblade that’s literal, if evil and foreboding can count as a personality, but seeing as the Gloomfolk aren’t doing too well under the rule of the Dread Lords freeing the sword from its prison beats the alternatives. Gloomgirl and the Doomblade are powerless alone but insanely strong together, and the sword’s lost powers hidden deep in the labyrinth will upgrade the pair’s lethality beyond all reason.
Doomblade is a lightning-fast metroidvania that’s had a demo on Steam for a while now. The basic gameplay hook is that, as soon as you tap on an enemy, Gloomgirl and the blade fly towards it and take it out, usually in a single hit. Initially the controls were mouse/keyboard-only but the PAX East demo upgrade added controller support, and now it feels even faster than before. The trick to the demo, in fact, is to slow down and think a bit rather than rushing in, because it’s very easy to dash straight into a trap and learn that Gloomgirl isn’t quite so invulnerable as her sword-companion.
Nice as the demo is, it’s about time for the full game to make it’s appearance and the release date has been revealed today as May 31. The trailer is a quick bite of pure action, with Gloomgirl and the Doomblade tearing through the underworld with wild abandon, and if that sounds good then the demo is still available and well worth checking out. It’s something to tide you over until May 31, at which point the Doomblade can finally rise up and hopefully not destroy the world in its quest for vengeance, but no promises.
