Sloths may not be quick but on a longboard they don’t have to be. Gravity and a good set of wheels take care of all the hard work, leaving Eddy the longboarding sloth free to deal with the more technically-demanding aspects of steering and balance. The mountain road twists and turns down a practically endless slope, past cliffs, waterfalls, and the occasional shortcut trail, and all Eddy has to do is ride the line on the far edge of control. Plus maybe throw in a trick or two as he drifts through the corners, just to keep things interesting.
Driftwood is a longboarding game that’s kind of about speed but mostly about the vibe of cruising down a mountain, dodging traffic and sliding around corners while looking for shortcuts and alternate paths. High scores unlock new outfits and boards to dress up a stylin’ sloth on the move, but if Eddy is the star of the show then the mountains are his costars. The scenery is just as important as the speed and tricks, adding to the feel of relaxation that acts as a counterpoint to the adrenaline. I got to play the demo of Driftwood before it came to an end at the start of May and it’s been on my personal watchlist ever since, and now the Early Access is ready to start on June 1. The announcement comes with the traditional trailer, so give it a watch to see what a sloth in action gets up to.
