Taika Waititi Speaks About His New Star Wars Movie, Says It's Time To Expand The Universe

It's no secret that beloved director Taika Waititi is working on a Star Wars movie, but we've learned virtually no information regarding what to expect from the new film since the project was revealed back in 2020. However, Waititi has finally opened up just a bit about his vision for the future of a galaxy far, far away.

«Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand,» Waititi told Total Film (via GamesRadar). «I don't think that I'm any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone's like, 'Oh great, well that's the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah, that's Chewbacca's grandmother.' That all stands alone, that's great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it's a very small story.»

By the sounds of it, Waititi has plans to tell some fresh stories in the Star Wars universe, which may come as a relief to many diehard Star Wars fans who have grown tired of the Skywalker family and adjacent characters and stories. After Rise of Skywalker brought the mainline series to a close, many feel it's time to move on.

However, Star Wars--at least in the short term--remains dedicated to those pre-existing characters and stories with spin-off shows like Obi-Wan, The Book of Boba Fett, and The Mandalorian, all of which feature characters from the original trilogy in some capacity. Even the upcoming Andor is a prequel to a prequel, following Rogue One's Cassian Andor during the early years of the Rebellion. Perhaps Waititii can begin to break this mold in 2023.

In the meantime, Waititi just finished up Thor: Love and Thunder, which will release on July 8 only in theaters, and he can be heard voicing Mo Morrison
