Lightyear director Angus MacLane explains why the film wouldn't work with Buzz's original voice actor, Tim Allen. Acting as a spinoff film from 1995's Toy Story, Lightyear tells the origin story of the in-universe space explorer who inspired the creation of the iconic Buzz Lightyear toy. Voiced by Chris Evans, of Captain America fame, Lightyear follows Buzz as he attempts to escape from an alien planet filled with ruthless robots. Initial critic reactions to the film have been mostly positive, but still more mixed than is typical for a Pixar release.
Trailers for Lightyear have revealed that, although the story is fresh and new, there will be callbacks to Buzz as he existed in the original Toy Story films. Lightyear's sports the toy's signature wrist communicator and Evans' voice performance does harken back to Allen's original voice work in Toy Story. Zurg also serves as Lightyear's central villain after first appearing in Toy Story 2 and being established as Buzz's arch enemy. In addition to Evans, Lightyear features voice performances from Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, Taika Waititi, Dale Soules, James Brolin, and Uzo Aduba, among others.
