Summer Game Fest 2024 has been confirmed to take place on 7th June this year, kickstarting what we expect to be a weekend full of video game showcases, announcements and more.
Geoff Keighley will once again host his summer gaming showcase from the YouTube Theatre in Los Angeles, “with thousands of in persons fans and millions watching online.” For the first time, the general public will be invited in to visit Summer Game Fest.
Summer Game Fest 2023 showed off a real bounty of game reveals and announcements, from Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Sonic Superstars, to gameplay for Final Fantasy VI Rebirth and Mortal Kombat 1, release dates for Remnant 2, Lies of P, Spider-Man 2 and so, so much more. Will this year offer the same?
One things for certain, though, and that’s that 2024 will see Summer Game Fest really expand to fill the void left by the dead and buried E3, where the last couple of years have solely focussed on giving access to press and creators. Opening up to the public – tickets go on sale on 7th May – is a big change of pace, though we’ll have to wait and see how many tickets are sold and how big an event it ends up being.
Of course, this all puts even more power and influence in the hands of Geoff Keighley, who has become what has felt like the only mouthpiece that the games industry uses for big showcases. Between Summer Game Fest and The Game Awards, Keighley has an effective monopoly on the cross-brand, cross-platform announcement stream, and unless you’re big enough to host your own digital showcase – your Microsofts, Sonys, Nintendos, Ubisofts, and others – then many companies end up sipping from his fountain to gain a sliver of awareness that it feels like he alone can provide.
