Starfield got a huge update last week, mostly focussed on fixing several softlocks that were stopping players from completing side quests. However, it also made some visual improvements, which as some players are now discovering, go further than expected.
In some cases, the changes introduced by the update alter the mood of an area entirely, and definitely for the better. Now, there seems to be more of a distinction between areas, as simple lighting changes go a long way to making settlements more memorable. Fans also find that bases look less generic and sterile, as the improved lighting brings out the colours of an area much more than what we had before the update.
The impact of these changes can be seen in before and after screenshots taken by Reddit user DinDisco. The difference between the new and old look for Madame Sauvage's Place is definitely the most dramatic, but the lighting changes can be felt everywhere.
It isn't just the lighting that has seen a huge improvement. As per the patch notes, almost everything in the game should look a little better now, from the charcater models of random NPCs, to your own reflection in the water. Widescreen support has also been improved, so you should be able to make the most of that if your monitor accommodates it.
Unfortunutely, not everyone will be able to update their game right now. The update has only been released in Steam Beta, with everyone else getting access to it further down the line. We were told that we'll have to wait around two weeks until the update leaves beta, so we can expect it to come to console next week.
After that, Bethesda has mentioned getting these big updates out every six weeks. This is a little longer to wait than other games, especially if we don't see any hotfixes in between, but the fan reception has certainly been positive, so it might be well worth the wait.
