Starfield is a pretty realistic depiction of what the world would look like should humanity ever venture out into space and leave Earth behind. It chooses to ignore some of the wackier elements of the sci-fi genre in favor of a NASA Punk aesthetic that has served it well. However, there's one part of Starfield that fans find a little bit unrealistic, and that the complete lack of cats and dogs across the entire Settled Systems.
If you've ever owned a dog or a cat, you're more than likely willing to run into a burning building to save its life should the need arise. Even if the event that wiped out all life on Earth in Starfield was some kind of cataclysmic event and humantiy needed to leave as soon as possible, I can guarantee some of you would smuggle a dog or two in your coats. That's why the fact there are zero cats, dogs, or pets of any kind is confusing fans a fair amount.

This topic was kicked off by u/Hbimajorv on the Starfield subreddit, who declares the lack of good boys the "most unrealistic thing about Starfield". With just over 1,000 comments at the time of writing, it's fair to say that a large number of fans agree with that statement too, and you'll find plenty of others simply confused about why there are no animals when previous Bethesda titles have gone out of their way to include them.
The elephant in the room in this conversation is obviously Dogmeat, the bestest boy from the Fallout series that somehow manages to survive a nuclear apocalypse to accompany you on your journey.
