Despite the general success of Bethesda's newest open-world RPG, , some notable flaws have even devoted fans of the developer's games levying heavy criticisms against it. For some players, the game is heavily lacking in terms of exploration, combat, and narrative, and can end up feeling like a shallow experience — not helped by lackluster balance when it comes to the game's core combat systems. In particular, 's melee weapons are a major pain point, falling heavily behind ranged options and lacking the variety and customization that other weapons get to have.
Luckily, like other Bethesda games, has a robust modding community, and the Melee Weapons Revised mod by samuel181093 (via Nexus Mods) goes a long way towards making the game's melee weapons more interesting and varied. Generally, the mod divides melee weapons into two distinct categories — lighter weapons, like knives, with lower base damage but higher critical damage, and heavier weapons with the opposite, creating more of a distinction between them. Additionally, though 's already-existing quality system doesn't apply to melee weapons for some reason, the mod rectifies that issue, allowing players to find more powerful variants.
Starfield has plenty of captivating tales and dynamic mechanics that make it an epic science fiction adventure — and an instant classic.
Unfortunately, while the mod can go a long way towards patching up 's lackluster melee combat, it would need to be of a much larger scale to fix them entirely. Problems like the general lack of melee weapons, with only nine melee weapon types in the entire game, and the lack of differentiation between different types, would require much larger changes. At the same time, changes on that scale would likely entail an overhaul of the entire melee combat system — something which might currently be outside the potential scope of mods.
