, one of Netflix’s most-viewed television shows of all time, has set a new viewership record ahead of the Season 2 premiere.
The South Korean survival thriller debuted on Netflix on September 17, 2021, and has since then become one of the streamer’s most popular TV series. It centers around the titular game, wherein a total of 456 players fight for their lives for the chance to win a whopping cash prize of ₩45.6 billion. It starred Lee Jung-jae, Wi Ha-joon, Jung Ho-yeon, Park Hae-soo, and more.
A recent report from Variety revealed that the first season of Squid Game has managed to garner a total of 330 million and over 2.8 billion hours viewed since its premiere, accumulating an impressive 60% spike in viewership ahead of the highly anticipated premiere of Season 2.
Squid Game Season 2 will debut globally on Netflix on December 26, 2024, with Lee returning once again as the last game’s survivor, Seong Gi-hun. Other returning cast members include Wi, Gong Yoo, and Lee Byung-hun. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who won the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series award at the 74th Primetime Emmys, also returned to direct the second season.
They will be joined by new cast members Yim Si-wan (Strangers from Hell), Kang Ha-neul (Midnight Runners), Park Gyu-young (Sweet Home), Lee Jin-uk (Dear Hyeri), Park Sung-hoon (The Glory), Yang Dong-geun (Ruler of Your Own World), Kang Ae-sim (Open the Door), Choi Seung-hyun (Tazza: The Hidden Card), and singer Jo Yu-ri.
“Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the states and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won,” the synopsis for Season 2 reads.
Squid Game returns on December 26.
