Amy likes Sonic, but Sonic doesn't like Amy. That's the dynamic we've been working with for years now, with the one-sided obsession between the pair being taken to comical lengths at times. I mean, there was that one time they beat the crap out of each other because Amy wanted to marry him. It's been a wild ride.
But now, that could be coming to an end. Over on Twitter, Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto is hinting that the pair will finally be in a proper, less volatile relationship in a future game, with the dev "looking forward" to seeing how Sonic's love life pans out.

In other words, yes, the director of many Sonic games may have just casually confirmed that Sonamy will be canon. In the roughly 18 years that I have followed this daft series, I never thought I'd see the day.
This came about from a fan inquiring about Sonic's relationship status. As it happens, Kishimoto was more than happy to shed some light on this.
"Sonic is single," confirms Kishimoto. "But what about lovers? What about Amy?"
He continues, seemingly unaware that his words could fuel the fire of shipping wars that have had a hold on the fanbase for years. "I'm also looking forward to seeing what kind of love Sonic will have in the future."
While this is a huge revelation, it isn't coming completely out of nowhere. As some fans noticed in Frontiers, some dialogue from Sonic implied he had secret feelings for Amy. More recent interpretations of the characters, such as what we saw in Netflix's Sonic Prime, also show the pair to be on much friendlier terms.
