Ever since KONAMI confirmed years of rumors to reveal that a SILENT HILL 2 remake was indeed in production, fans have been eagerly awaiting the day they'll once again be able to step in the shoes of protagonist James Sunderland and go back to the eponymous town after receiving a letter from Mary, his deceased wife.
Recent activity on the Steam page suggests that news about the launch date could be forthcoming. As listed on SteamDB, the SILENT HILL 2 remake page was updated to remove the mention of Portuguese subtitles and add Brazilian and Ukrainian subtitles. Most importantly, support for Steam Achievements was added. The latter is usually introduced when game development is drawing to a close.
This isn't surprising. Nearly a year ago, we learned that the remake has been in production since 2019. Piotr Babieno, CEO of developer Bloober Team (Layers of Fear, Observer, The Medium), said the project was already in 'late stage production' where all the elements were being polished.
Moreover, actor Luke Roberts (who voices protagonist James Sunderland) told fans the SILENT HILL 2 remake targets an early 2024 launch window. If that's still the case, a release date announcement is overdue and could come sometime during Halloween's spooky season.
Powered by Unreal Engine 5 technology, the remake of the cult classic psychological horror game will feature completely remade enemy AI and improved combat design. The camera has also shifted to a modern over-the-shoulder view. However, the developers at Bloober Team have promised the remake would faithfully stick to the original story's canon.
