Ryan Reynolds has an appropriately hilarious reaction to reuniting with Free Guy and The Adam Project director Shawn Levy for Deadpool 3. Since making his true debut as the Merc with the Mouth, Reynolds’ fourth wall-breaking mutant has become one of cinema’s most popular comic book characters. Tim Miller's Deadpool (2016) and David Leitch’s Deadpool 2 (2018) are a pair of the highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time. Plans for a third film in the Deadpool franchise were already in motion before being brought to a halt in 2019.
Following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the X-Men, Deadpool, and Fantastic Four were brought under the control of Marvel Studios. Despite Reynolds’ inimitable popularity as the character, it was unclear how Wade Wilson’s R-rated irreverence would fit into the family-friendly Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not long after Deadpool made his soft MCU debut in a promotional video for Disney and 20th Century's Free Guy, Marvel Studios confirmed Deadpool 3 was in development with Reynolds, Wendy Molyneux, and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin returning to write the script. Fresh off the Netflix release of The Adam Project, it was reported that Marvel Studios is in negotiations with Shawn Levy to direct Deadpool 3, marking the third collaboration between Levy and Reynolds.
