Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier is reporting that the conclusion of Destiny 2’s Light and Darkness saga, The Final Shape, has been delayed and will now launch in June 2024. The expansion was set to launch on February 27th on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC so if the rumours are true, Bungie are going to have to find up to three months of additional content to keep the players happy.
It is also reported that Marathon, a reboot of sorts of the developers very first game, has also been delayed until 2025, although that title never had an official release date.
Bungie have also announced job cuts, although the number has not been specified. Pete Parson, CEO of Bungie, took to Twitter and wrote “Today is a sad day at Bungie as we say goodbye to colleagues who have all made a significant impact on our studio. What these exceptional individuals have contributed to our games and Bungie culture has been enormous and will continue to be a part of Bungie long into the future.”
Marathon released all the way back in 1994, an early compatriot to Doom that was a Mac exclusive before spreading to PC with its sequel. With a convoluted narrative around time travel and AI gaining sentience, a lot of narrative threads carried through to Halo and beyond.
Rumours of a Marathon reboot from Bungie have been coming for a while, and the trailer seems to show something much more action-packed, potentially with a live service competitive element thrown into the mix.
