Paladins have some of the most interesting class features in thanks to the oaths that play a central role in defining them. Although the idea of upholding oaths comes from the implementation of paladins in the tabletop experience, developer Larian Studios has tweaked the rules for the paladin to fit better with video game mechanics. These changes are focused in particular on creating fun consequences for keeping or breaking the sacred oaths of a paladin.
Of all the classes in, the paladin is the most thematically and mechanically aligned with the archetype of a noble, self-sacrificing hero. The recruitable companions in , however, are mostly on the more murky side of the ethical spectrum. Whether dealing with an amoral vampire spawn, the cleric of an evil god, or a ruthless warrior from a tyrannical theocracy, working with NPCs in can be taxing for any paladin. The key to interacting with these ne'er-do-wells without feeling self-righteous or not righteous enough comes from understanding just what paladin subclasses in have to offer.

Three paladin subclasses are available during character creation in , with each subclass being characterized by its own distinct Oaths. Perhaps the most iconic is the Oath of Devotion paladin, which embodies the classic fantasy archetype of «knight in shining armor» bound by a (Lawful Good) vow to protect the innocent, keep their promises, and stand up against evil wherever it is found. Accordingly, Oath of Devotion paladins have features designed to bolster themselves and their allies in front-line combat. One such ability, a Holy Rebuke power exclusive to, damages enemies who strike a Devoted paladin's allies.
