Reviving something popular from the past, whether it be a best-selling game or a well-loved TV show, is always a risk. There's usually a worry that whoever it is doing the reviving might not do the source material justice. That has not been the case when it comes to X-Men '97. The first season of the rebooted animated show has been going down a storm, and as we stare down the barrel of its three-part finale, Reebok has turned Wolverine and Gambit into some officially licensed footwear.
Designed by Jesse Hernandez, better known to some as Urbanaztec, the two pairs of X-Men '97-themed sneakers will be available to buy through the official Reebok Store and Footlocker for $90 each starting from May 2. I say starting, if other themed footwear released recently is anything to go by, Reebok's Wolverine and Gambit sneakers won't be in stock for long.
Sneaker News notes that even though Wolverine and Gambit are the only X-Men to have been selected for the limited range, it's likely other characters will be turned into footwear in the future, especially if the sneakers sell as well as I expect them to. The Wolverine shoes are black, blue, and yellow, the patterns made to look like Wolverine's mask and the hero's name embroidered in yellow on the side. Gambit's sneakers are pink, purple, brown, and black, again with his name embroidered onto the side, and both pairs have silhouettes of the characters incorporated into their design.
The X-Men '97-themed collaborations keep on coming as the Disney Plus show continues to gather momentum heading into its final few weeks. Last week, Xbox unveiled a one-of-a-kind Series X designed to look like it has been wrapped in a unique X-Men comic. The lucky winner of the X-Men '97 Xbox sweepstake will also get a Wolverine controller to match, packaged in the same way as an X-Men action figure would have been during the original show's run.
