Ever since Gears of War launched with Gary Jules’ now-famous cover of “Mad World,” the moody song cover has been a bit of a go-to staple for video game trailers, to the point of mockery at times. But it can still be effective at times, and considering the gave that popularized this trend, it only seems fitting that the launch trailer for the next big upcoming Xbox game, Redfall, features such a cover song as well. As seen below, the vampire-slaying action is accompanied by a cover of Soundgarden’s classic song “Black Hole Sun.”
Granted, the original song itself is pretty moody as well, so it’s not like there’s a massive injustice being done here. And it is appropriate to use “Black Hole Sun,” especially given the psychedelic feel of the lyrics, sound, and music video, which ties in quite well with the imagery of a quaint Massachusets island town that sees reality flushed down the drain by a plague of vampires who have blocked out the sun, leaving a group of four people with extraordinary skills to try and combat them. Hopefully this open-world FPS will be as good as the song, and we’ll see if that’s the case when Redfall comes out on May 2 for XSX and PC.
