Zack Snyder's Netflix sci-fi movie Rebel Moon is retooled from his original Star Wars pitch, but it also has format similarities with the Dune sci-fi universe. Snyder's currently in-production Rebel Moon focuses on a young woman named Kora (Sofia Boutella) recruiting warriors to defend a colony under attack from galactic conqueror Regent Balisarius (Rupert Friend). While much of the focus on Rebel Moon has been with its former status as a Star Wars movie and Snyder's not-yet-seen updates of it into an original story, it's a more complex undertaking than simply that.
Snyder's approach in assembling Rebel Moon is reminiscent of Dune in more subtle ways compared to Star Wars. The most significant is the fact that Rebel Moon is set to be a two-part epic, not unlike Denis Villeneuve's storytelling strategy with Dune. The major difference lies in the decision from the outset to shoot parts 1 and 2 of Rebel Moon back-to-back.

Dune, based on Frank Herbert's series of novels, was initially filmed as one part with Dune part 2, set up by its predecessor, getting the greenlight by Warner Bros. after its opening weekend success. Rebel Moon's planning is arguably the smarter move from the outset on Netflix's part, but it also suggests a similarly contained but nonetheless massive two-part epic as Villeneuve's Dune. With that said, neither Dune nor Rebel Moon are so boxed into their two-part structure as to end outright from that point.
Both Snyder himself and Netflix have spoken of their hopes for Rebel Moon's potential as a sci-fi universe with spin-off possibilities. While this would seem to indicate that Rebel Moon's primary story will be told within the two
