If Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man ever returns to the MCU, there's only one way it could possibly work. Since his debut in 2008, Tony Stark was the centerpiece of the MCU throughout Phases 1, 2, and 3, acting as a key leader of the Avengers and a noticeable presence in other storylines through personal appearances and Stark technology. But while Tony's tech and the memory of his legacy can continue to grace the MCU in appropriate doses moving forward, Tony himself can't return unless it's in the context of one particular character's story.
Iron Man's Avengers: Endgame death is one of the MCU's most powerful emotional moments to date, as well as a crucial point in the grand scheme of its plot since it marks the final defeat of Thanos. Even more importantly, Tony Stark's sacrifice is the ultimate conclusion to his expertly-crafted MCU character arc and has deep implications for those heroes close to him, such as Spider-Man and Captain America. For all these reasons, undoing his death would not only be logistically difficult, but it would also cheapen the impact of the moment and its meaning for every character involved. Although it's a tragic fact to face, the demise of RDJ's Tony Stark is thus decidedly (and rightfully) permanent, as evidenced by the whopping five times Marvel's What If...? rehashed Iron Man's death in different ways.
