Robert Downey Jr. and filmmaker Shane Black are officially reuniting for a brand-new movie for Amazon Studios. The two last worked together when they teamed up for Iron Man 3 back in 2013.
The famous Iron Man is arguably the role Downey Jr. is associated the most with. Downey Jr.'s fanbase was devastated when Tony Stark fell to his death in Avengers: Endgame. Downey Jr. is mostly associated with being the hero, the “good guy," the chivalrous knight, the protector. However, he can also play the exact opposite type of role at the drop of a hat.

Now, Matthew Belloni reveals in Puck's What I'm Hearing newsletter that Downey Jr. will be stepping into a role that is based off of the character Parker, who was created by author Donald E. Westlake, who writes under the pseudonym Richard Stark. The character of Parker was first introduced in Stark’s 1962 novel, “The Hunter.” Per The Wrap, Parker is established in the book as being “a professional thief who’s left for dead by his past associate and spends the rest of the novel trying to track down his former accomplice.” Parker is summarized in the book series as being “a murderous and meticulous criminal, with a hard edge.”
The novel has actually already been adapted to film twice before — 1967’s Point Blank starring Lee Marvin and 1999’s Payback starring Mel Gibson. The most recent actor to step into the role was Jason Statham in the 2013 film, Parker. Given that so many actors have been able to tackle this role and knowing this is Downey Jr.'s re-introduction in a lot of ways back to the big screen, it will be fascinating to see what he does with this opportunity.
