Pepper Potts' (Gwyneth Paltrow) debut as Rescue in Avengers: Endgame may have an utterly devastating deeper meaning. Starting off as Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) trusted secretary and confidante, the pair eventually fell in love and became MCU's first romantic couple. Their relationship lasted until Iron Man's death fighting Thanos (Josh Brolin). While that in itself was already tragic, a new theory suggests that Pepper's Endgame role is much sadder than initially perceived.
Tony and Pepper's relationship organically developed, but it wasn't a walk on the park for them. After the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the pair broke up because he wouldn't give up his commitment to the Avengers Initiative and she was afraid that it would spell his death. Ultimately, they got back together, and on the heels of Thanos' snap, the pair got married and lived a quiet life with their daughter, Morgan Stark (Lexi Rabe). When the idea of the time heist came, Iron Man couldn't resist the call of duty: he suited back up, but sadly didn't survive the whole ordeal.

As the culmination of the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios staged a massive final battle for Avengers: Endgame which involved all prominent heroes in the universe. This included Pepper debuting her Rescue suit. Her arrival and subsequent team up with her husband were some of the most memorable moments in the whole sequence, but it wasn't explained why she had to be there. Despite her suit, she was never trained to be a superhero. If anything, it's dangerous for her to partake in the battle.
