While Chris Hemsworth's Thor is far from the only significant MCU character to command his own franchise, there's a reason why, with the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, he will become the only character thus far to warrant four dedicated solo movies. Ever since his debut over a decade ago, the Asgardian God of Thunder has proved incredibly popular with audiences around the world. However, unlike many other celebrated legacy characters, such as Captain America and Iron Man, Thor has a unique quality that makes him the most suitable figure to explore over an extended series.
Ahead of the release of the first Avengers movie in 2012, Thor made his big-screen bow in Kenneth Branagh's eponymous 2011 fantasy hit. After receiving praise for the character's blend of other-worldly stoicism and humor, Thor returned for a sequel in 2013's Thor: The Dark World. Although less acclaimed than the previous entry, the film's success did not prevent the character from reappearing in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron. This was followed by Taika Waititi's wildly successful reinvention of the character in Thor: Ragnarok, believed by many fans to be among the best movies in the entire MCU. After two further appearances in the final films of the so-called Infinity Saga, Thor: Love and Thunder promises to reveal yet another side to one of Marvel's most enduring and iconic creations.
