HBO has released a trailer for its upcoming 18th century period comedy Our Flag Means Death, all about swashbuckling in the high seas. The series will premiere on HBO Max on March 3, with Season 1 spanning 10 episodes.
The series is loosely based on true adventures of Stede Bonnet, a wealthy landowner who gave up fancy living in 1717 to try a life of piracy. Our Flag Means Death is created by David Jenkins, and executive produced by Thor Ragnarok and JoJo Rabbit director Taika Waititi, who will also act in the show and direct the pilot. Waititi plays Blackbeard--depicted as a rockstar of the era--who, after a fateful run-in with Rhys Darby's Bonnet, seems to slide into a mentorship role for the would-be salty dog. Check out the trailer below.
In addition to Darby and Waititi, the show's ensemble cast includes Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O'Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen, and Leslie Jones.
Our Flag Means Death is one of many new projects that Waititi is involved with. The prolific filmmaker's upcoming sports comedy Next Goal Wins, starring Michael Fassbender, was shot in late 2019, and he recently wrapped production on the Marvel movie Thor: Love and Thunder, ahead of its July 2022 release. He's also developing two animated Charlie and the Chocolate Factory series for Netflix, co-producing the FX comedy Reservation Dogs, and is attached to a future Star Wars movie.
