Rockstar Games has announced that Cfx.re, the team behind the popular GTA 5 FiveM and RDR2 RedM multiplayer mods, is now part of Rockstar.
The news was announced via Twitter and Rockstar's official website some hours ago. For those in the unknown, - the FiveM and RDR2 RedM mods allow players to play multiplayer on customized dedicated servers. Some might argue that these custom multiplayer experiences are/were even better than the original multiplayer modes of both titles.
"Over the past few years, we've watched with excitement as Rockstar’s creative community have found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through the creation of dedicated roleplay servers", Rockstar now writes on its website. "As a way to further support those efforts, we recently expanded our policy on mods to officially include those made by the roleplay creative community."
Now, the Cfx.re team joining Rockstar can be considered quite 'interesting' to say the least - back in 2015, Rockstar sort of banned everyone affiliated with the mod, including subreddit moderators who contributed to the mod. "I am not a developer of FiveM, I am just the mere moderator of the subreddit, but yes, I have some sort of affiliation with the mod", former subreddit moderator Qais Patankar wrote in 2015 after being banned. "I was skeptical that we were banned (screenshot) for being contributors (in some way) to the FiveM project.”
The former moderator added that other community members were seemingly banned as well. "They (Rockstar) have also singled out and banned community members who have not been involved in the development of the mod at all. Rockstar Games are banning people for simply being affiliated with
