Anyone who owns a copy of Pokemon Scarlet or Pokemon Violet for the Switch is currently at risk of losing their save file data.
As Eurogamer reports(Opens in a new window), a bug has been introduced to the game which will trigger save file deletions without any warning. A Reddit thread(Opens in a new window) details how some players discovered their save data had been deleted after pairing the game with the Pokemon Go app to send a postcard. However, other players said their save data disappeared after downloading The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC pack, which contains two expansions. The bug may exist in the February patch (Version 1.2.0) Nintendo released for the games which added the Pokemon Go connectivity feature.
In some cases, the save files contain hundreds of hours of gameplay progress, and it's unclear right now if those files can ever be recovered. Until Nintendo can explain and fix the bug, the best thing players can do to protect themselves is not link their game to Pokemon Go or interact with the DLC. Nintendo Support has apparently acknowledged there is a problem and is investigating.
Anyone with a Switch Online subscription should be able to recover lost save files thanks to the included option to store backups of them in the cloud.
