Withstarting to look toward its next mainline game generation, one aspect of the series could do with a big shakeup — the starter Pokémon. As approaches the end of its DLC cycle with the impending release of, the mainline series of games will be moving onto its tenth generation — presumably introducing a new region, new characters, and a new collection of Pokémon to capture. However, while is a series that holds strongly onto many of its traditions, changing some of the franchise's long-held conventions could help the gameplay stay fresh.
Since the first games in the series, the starter trio of each mainline game has held to the type triangle of Fire, Water, and Grass — for good reason, as it firmly establishes the core mechanics of type effectiveness by having each started type be weak to or strong against one of the other two types. And, at least in older games, the rival character of each game would pick the starter that the protagonist was weak against, encouraging careful team-building to cover for that weakness. However, as games continue to move to new regions and explore new concepts, the standard starter type triangle could also do with some change.

While the Fire/Water/Grass type triangle for starters is well-established and iconic, switching it up could provide a breath of fresh air for the 10th generation while also potentially making for more interesting starter Pokémon.
