In January, the «Pokemon with guns» game Palworld blew up the internet. Thanks partly to its availability via Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview, the game attracted some 25 million players. Developer Pocketpair says that plans to bring the game to other platforms continue apace, and discussions with unnamed platform holders are underway, likely including PlayStation.
Speaking to Bloomberg (thanks, VGC), Pocketpair CEO and game director Takuro Mizobe said that the company is open to a partnership or acquisition but that «we are and will remain a small studio; I want to make multiple small games. Big-budget triple-A games are not for us.»
Palworld was reportedly developed for less than 1 billion yen ($6.7 million), bringing back tens of billions of yen in profit. Since Palworld's release, a slew of high-profile games have launched, including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the surprise hit Helldivers 2, which have indeed served to suck some of the oxygen out of the room. Still, Pocketpair has something special in its hands, and we hope to learn more about its plans in the not-too-distant future.
