Sony Interactive Entertainment is reportedly planning to skip Gamescom 2023.
In recent years the company has opted to showcase its games through its own digital events, rather than host conferences or have a significant physical presence at major industry conventions like the expo in Cologne, which comes at a considerable expense.
Sony most recently appeared at Gamescom in 2019, which was the last in-person edition of the show before the Covid-19 pandemic.
And the PlayStation firm has reportedly told German industry publication GamesMarkt that it has no plans to exhibit at Gamescom this summer.
Gamescom Opening Night Live, the kick-off showcase hosted and produced by Geoff Keighley, will return on August 22, with the main event running from August 23-27.
According to organisers Koelnmesse and the German Games Industry Association, as of the middle of March, 10% more companies had registered for 2023’s event than had done so for 2022’s show at the same time a year earlier.
In April, Nintendo was announced as the first major publisher to be attending Gamescom 2023.
The Swich maker last attended the convention in 2019, when it primarily showcased games launching later that year. It also had a large number of booths on the show floor for consumers to try its games.
