While the announcement of Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal ports for modern consoles is a much welcomed one, the Persona series is at a point where it deserves more than just a port of Persona 3 Portable, especially for its 25th anniversary. For the series’ 25th anniversary, ports of the latest three mainline titles were announced for Xbox consoles, PC, and even Nintendo Switch, broadening the series’ reach. Although the announcement is worthy of celebration from fans new and old, it’s disappointing specifically in regards to how it handles Persona 3.
Persona 3 is in an awkward spot compared to the other “modern” Persona titles, Persona 4 and Persona 5. While Persona 4 and 5 each have their own “definitive” versions with additional content compared to their original releases akin to Pokémon’s “third versions” — Golden for 4 and Royal for 5 — Persona 3 doesn’t have such an edition. Persona 3 FES was released with extra content under the name of “The Answer,” but was then followed by Persona 3 Portable. Although the quality of The Answer tends to be rather divisive among fans, Portable doesn’t include it. Regardless of how good or bad The Answer may be, it’s still missing content. Portable also lacks the animated cutscenes and 3D overworld exploration of 3 and FES, having much of the game play out closer to a visual novel, although 3D dungeon exploration still remains.

But Portable still comes with its own slew of fantastic additions, including the option to play as a female protagonist with all-new social links, most notably with the game’s male party members which the male protagonist critically lacked. It also added some Persona 4 character
