The ability to communicate with ocean life is one of Aquaman's most distinguishing powers, and now the Sea King has finally described what it actually feels like. In the story 'The Sea Beyond,' appearing in Batman: Urban Legends #17, Aquaman teams up with the Dark Knight to stop a dangerous new undersea menace.
This power, to talk to the myriad creatures swimming in the ocean, has long been a staple of Aquaman’s character, although its exact nature has evolved over the years. The ability was initially portrayed much more straightforwardly, with Aquaman able to outright command all sea life to do whatever he told it. Later, these commands became more «nudges,” and there were some creatures, such as piranhas, that he struggled to control. The ability was further refined during the New 52 era, giving it a more metaphysical aspect by revealing Aquaman taps into the cosmic Life Force. Now, Batman: Urban Legends adds a new wrinkle to this unique ability, offering new insight into how it works.

Set earlier in both Batman and Aquaman's careers, the story opens with the Sea King coming to Batman, asking the Dark Knight for help eliminating fish poisoned by the Joker’s toxin. Aquaman tells Batman he learned of this carnage when white noise he’s heard his entire life suddenly faded. He elaborates further, saying the »fish went quiet." While the two work out a plan, they are sidetracked by a massive seismic disruption undersea.
